If you've got the Wimbledon bug, or even if you haven't, the home of tennis is leafy Wimbledon at the All England Club and it is one of the most exclusive tennis clubs in the world. Sadly most people will only ever be able to peer through its gates or sit in the crowd as a spectactor during the championships (if they are prepared to fork out a small fortune). But don't despair as there are plenty of other tennis courts in and around Wimbledon and in the London Borough of Merton. Best of all, many of them are available for free. Here is the pick of the bunch for the best public tennis courts near Wimbledon:
Wimbledon Park has approximately 20 tennis courts for hire, it is a huge site and we believe the largest parks tennis court site in London. The surface is all macadam/hard court with an extensive tennis programme taking place too throughout the year.
Tamworth Farm is located on the London road which flows between Tooting and Mitcham and lies directly opposite Figges Marsh, a pleasant recreation ground near Mitcham. It has five tennis courts available which are all free to use and first come, first serve basis. There are no floodlights and the court surfaces have seen better days, but they are perfectly playable and at the end of the day they are free too.
Colliers Wood Recreation Ground is fairly well hidden, approximately five minutes' walk from Colliers Wood station. It has two artificial courts on an astroturf surface, however they are not always set up for tennis as the multi-use games area is also used for football. You'll need to check with Merton council for the availability of the courts.
Dundonald rec is a thriving recreation ground near to Wimbledon and Morden with playing fields and two hard courts, which are also compeltely free to use. Furthermore there is an active tennis coaching programme taking place. The ground has been under public scrutiny, with the council attempting to sell off a large part of the fields for housing, but that has since stalled. It may be a case of use them or lose them.
OpenPlay is a platform to connect sports facilities to their users. We're breaking down barriers to getting more people active.
