If you’re looking to get into shape, Battersea park is awash with fitness programmes and clubs. Swift Fitness hosts sociable bootcamps on Monday and Wednesday evenings and British Military Fitness dictate tough army style workouts on Tuesday evenings, Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. The park is also a popular running destination and is home to a number of clubs such as the Chelsea Running Club and the Clapham Runners. Many of the club runners will train to compete in the Battersea Park running races which occur in Spring-Summer time. For kids, there’s the “Go Ape” treetop adventure obstacle course, where kids of all ages can climb, slide, scramble and zip wire through the trees.
Ironsides Rugby are Battersea’s premier rugby club (and arguably that of South London), with a range of senior men and women’s teams and a selection of junior squads. The 4 senior teams train on Tuesday and Thursday nights and compete in competitive leagues along with the occasional vets side. The Juniors take to the field on Sunday mornings to learn the core skills of rugby whilst simultaneously having bundles of fun. Trials for the teams can be undergone by simply showing up at a practise session at Openview, off Burntwood Lane, Earlsford or by phoning 020 8874 9913 in advance.
Pi Studios; “The home of Pilates” has recently moved to a new location and is now set in the iconic Conservatory in Ransome’s Dock, not far from Battersea Park. The studio offers top of the range pilates classes in tower equipment and mat form for groups and individuals. Nova Pilates studio provides toning and strengthening classes in a range of pilates styles. They cover reformer, cardio pilates, pre and postnatal, barre and private bookings. Their instructors come from a variety of backgrounds, from physiotherapy to professional dancers, and provide expert and educated classes. Battersea Yoga offers classes in a variety of yoga styles including Mindfulness, Hatha, pre and postnatal. Get an introductory offer of £25 for 10 days of unlimited yoga. You can also book in for a free yoga class for Sweaty Betty’s in store yoga club. Classes are held on Sunday mornings at 10am and must be booked in advance.
The London Olympic Weightlifting Academy are hoping to bring the sport to the masses and fight the stigma that it is only for the iron pumped elites. They focus on lifting within your personal limitations using a controlled, safe and effective method and under close supervision. The centre offers group sessions, competition training and one to one training.
The Mixed Martial Arts Den near Battersea Park station is a gritty fighting gym, training people in Muay Thai, Ladies’ Muay Thai, Boxing, Brazilian Jui Jitsu and Kids’ Wrestling.
