Area guide: Southwark
The London Borough of Southwark covers some of London’s most vibrant communities such as Peckham, Dulwich, Camberwell, Bermondsey, Walworth and Rotherhith. It has been home to famous residents including Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise (Dulwich Village), Emma Thompson (Camberwell) and Rio Ferdinand (Peckham) and Charles Dickens. Notable Southwark sites include London Bridge, the Dulwich Picture Gallery and schools such as Dulwich College, Alleyn’s and James Allen’s Girls School (JAGS). Activities in Southwark
Southwark Council’s Parks are managed by Quadron Services and all their sports facilities must be booked through their team. Examples include stunning Dulwich Park with its 11 a side football pitches, bowling green, free tennis courts, basketball courts and cricket nets. Southwark Park, Belair Park in Dulwich and Tanner Street Park offer free tennis courts in South London which is the current policy of Southwark council.
Southwark Leisure Centres include Camberwell Leisure Centre, Dulwich Leisure Centre, Geraldine Hamsworth Sports Facility (otherwise known as the Imperial War Museum tennis courts) and Peckham Pulse. These are all managed through Fusion Lifestyle and offer a great range of gyms, swimming pools, sports halls and fitness classes. Southwark School sports facilitiesinclude Alleyn’s School, Dulwich College Sports Centre, Dulwich Sports Ground, James Allen’s Girls School, the Edward Alleyn Club, Dulwich tennis club and Camber Tennis Club.
