London’s Best Indoor Tennis Courts

Being the home to Wimbledon and currently the ATP World Tour Finals, it’s no wonder that tennis is such a popular sport amongst Londoners.  But London’s weather does not always live up to the strawberries and cream sunshine of the centre court in July, and the thought of bouncing onto court mid downpour or during frost season is enough to test anyone’s break point.  Luckily London has served us with a set of excellent indoor facilities, to keep you playing all through the winter.

North

The Islington Tennis Centre (Market Road, Islington, London N7 9PL) is one of the biggest indoor courts in London.  With its 6 indoor and 2 floodlit outdoor courts, it is also one of the busiest. You don’t have to be a member to book a court, but members do get a two day head start to nab a court, which is sometimes all the difference with this bustling centre.  Drop in prices range hugely from £10 to £24 per hour during peak times, but the quality of their indoor courts make it well worth a visit.  They also have reasonably priced drop in coaching sessions and courses for juniors and adults.

David Lloyd Finchley (High Road, London N12 0QZ) has 10 indoor courts and 9 outdoor courts.  The club and courts are maintained to a high standard, meaning that membership prices are also high.  The club also has a successful junior tennis club called Tennis All Stars.

South

David Lloyd Raynes Park (Bushey Road, Raynes Park, London, SW20 8DE) offer 21 tennis courts, 9 of which are indoor.  As it’s a David Lloyd chain, courts are for members only.  Membership prices start at £90 per month.  The coaches available at the club are excellent and most can be booked for junior and senior coaching.

Harbour Club Chelsea (London SW6) is the Grand Slam of indoor courts, but it comes with a considerable price tag. There are 13 tennis courts, 9 are indoor, and the 4 outdoors become bubble covered during the winter.  The club has a team of highly qualified and enthusiastic coaches providing first-rate classes and courses to members.

East

Redbridge Sports & Leisure Centre (Forest Road, Barkingside, Redbridge IG6 3HD). This sports centre has been recently renovated and hosts 8 indoor tennis courts.  There are also 6 floodlit outdoor tennis courts.  Indoor court prices for non-members are great value, starting at £10.50 off-peak and £12.50 during peak times.  They have adult programmes running seven days a week and junior coaching from “Tots Tennis” to the Performance Academy.

West

Westway Sports and Fitness Centre (1 Crowthorne Road, London W10 6RP) has 8 indoor acrylic courts, and 2 outdoor floodlit clay courts.  The courts are not expensive to hire but should be booked well in advance to beat the crowds.  It is an LTA Accredited Performance Centre with top of the range coaching staff.  The centre hosts an array of junior and adult classes, both pay as you play and course based for those looking to brush up on their skills.  The Westway Tennis League is available for those looking to get competitive.

Campden Hill Lawn Tennis Club (9 Aubrey Walk, London W8 7JH) is one of the biggest private tennis clubs in central London, with a total of 12 tennis courts.  6 are indoor Plexipave courts whilst the other 6 are outdoor artificial grass courts.  Unfortunately court hire is reserved for members only and the club currently has a two year waiting list.
